Guardian Picture Desk Day At The Quad, 12.03.11

Jeff Moore

Today I attended a talk at The Quad hosted by the Guardian Picture Desk as part of Format Festive currently taking place in Derby. It was a great opportunity to learn what it’s like to choose the images that are printed in the Guardian, how they are selected and to follow the process from camera to paper. We soon came to the appreciate that our photos have little chance of gracing a national newspaper, but as Roger Tooth explained at great length – news is happening in all places all of the time, so you never know…

Other speakers included Martin Goodwin, a Guardian photographer, who showed a selection of his photos and gave us the background to the stories they told, Jeff Moore, a freelance photographer who, as he put it ‘had connections’ and could wangle his way into every newsworthy situation – many of them decidedly ‘hairy’ and Martin Argles, also a Guardian photographer who had the unenviable task of following Gordon Brown for the entire election campaign, but who left us all spell bound with what he revealed.

An excellent day with lunch included, well done Format and well done The Quad!
